Cultivating Lightheartedness

Laughter is the best medicine.

Even before menopause, I would run incredibly hot during sessions. I figured it was just nervous energy, but I needed to discover how to channel it. I learned to wear slip-off shoes even in winter, to send the nervous energy through my feet into the earth to be grounded.

Then I heard about Reiki, the passing of energy for the most beneficial good, and instantly became intrigued. It has been an amazing adjunct, whether combined with hypnotherapy or as a modality on its own. Developed by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan during the early 1900s, Reiki is one way to tap into universal energy.

When I enrolled, I expected to learn some techniques much like learning massage. To my surprise, what we really did was about fifteen hours of meditation. After being attuned, we were taught how to facilitate the flow of energy and the release of negativity.

I had a profound vision during my Reiki I class, which included being deeply in service to Jesus by washing his feet with my hair, cleaning his wounds, and assisting him. Now, I was not brought up Christian; if anything, my parents are militant agnostics, so this was very unexpected.

After this class, I was qualified to perform self-Reiki, to pass energy through my own body to facilitate relaxation and thus the healing process. I also noticed a new relationship with animals - cats in particular come running up to me in the street, a phenomenon I like to call Rei-kitty.

After a year of practice, I went for Reiki II in order to learn how to assist others. Another fifteen-hour meditation ensued. Once again, I set my intention to be in service, and this time I saw myself before Mary Magdalene, washing her feet with my hair, wiping away her tears, knowing my role is to offer comfort and compassion to those who have suffered loss and grief.

Another year passed, and I decided to go for my Reiki III, the ability to do distance healings. It was a period of conflict and inner confusion, so I set the intention to experience clarity. On the last day of our attunements, nine students circled me on the massage table, the last one to receive the Reiki energy that day. One student laid her hands on my temples, another on my ankles, and the others formed a linking bridge to continuously pass energy through my being. “Clarity, clarity, clarity,” I chanted in my head, “Clarity, clarity, clarity.” When Jim Carrey appeared…

Yes, Jim Carrey, snorting like a crazy man, a bottle of sinus medication in one hand, laughing at me, saying, "Clarity? You want Clarity? Try this for clarity, Kayla. Try lightening up!"

Yes, how to stop taking myself so seriously, cultivate lightheartedness, how to see humor in my situation, how to inspire through the ultimate medicine, laughter.

I have a deep respect for Reiki and practice every day. But I always have a secret smile before we begin, blessing the situation in the name of Jesus, Mary, and Jim.

Just for Today

I let go of anger,
knowing I can gently express my inner needs.

I let go of worry,
choosing to trust that I have been heard.

I am deeply thankful
to a kind and benevolent universe.

I am focused on my work
in creative and productive ways.

I am kind and loving,
to myself and all beings.

Pink Moon Reiki Ritual

We had a Full Pink Moon, a micro moon, two weeks ago. What a lovely day for a full immersion ritual.

I started the day purifying my body, scrubbing down with a lava exfoliant respendid in essential oils. Next, I did a self-blessing Reiki ritual with St.John's oil - Affirming,  "Too blessed to be stressed, too anointed to be disappointed."

After some light housework, I got into the goodies. I began by carving my intentions on a white candle using my athame - from base to tip, all I was willing and ready to let go of; From tip to base, all I was now welcoming in.

Usually, I'd do a Dragonsblood ritual, but I was out of my beloved resin. Instead, I discovered a sage wand in my attache case of magical goodness, probably back from Herland days, maybe some thirty years old.

It felt so good to smudge myself, the house, and the garden. I always wonder what the neighbors think, but then I remember I live in Santa Cruz and nobody cares if you're out blessing your space.

I did some journaling work and created a collage. Currently, I'm studying Black Moon Lillith in one's astrology chart, and doing this type of shadow work is poignant. We hear a lot about the Super Moon, but here was the Micro Moon, the microscope, the laser, honing in to essential truths and deep revelations.

I placed two bottles of water to be blessed by the moon over the next three days outside on the glass table - one, "Divine Intention," and the other, "Elixir of Life."

I added four tumbled rose quartz stones into a foot bath, relaxing into soothing hot water, remembering that both my Black Moon Lilith and Chiron (the wounded healer) are conjunct in Pisces in my natal chart. I remembered the surgery on my feet (which Pisces rules) and how my daughter would always say I was a witch because I know when it is going to rain when the scars throb.

And so I ended my day of ceremony. The candle had burned to completion, I thanked the four directions, opened the circle, and stepped back into the mundane world - refreshed, rejuvenated, and reinspired.

Blessed be.

Journey Through the Tarot

Journey Through the Tarot
An Integrated System for Holistic Healing

A comparison of traditional Tarot cards to modern-day decks demonstrates how the Tarot is an integrated tool for holistic health that offers insights for personal growth and transformation through the use of symbols, archetypes, and allegories.

"This book is a true gem for both experienced tarot readers and beginners. Unlike a standard guide to tarot card meanings, this small and very readable volume adds a lot of context to tarot as a historical divination tool that adapts itself to modern-day readers. A delightful and informative book!" - Lana Tyehimba Touched by Tarot

Journey Through the Tarot is a gem for anyone looking to delve into the world of Tarot, and as a tarot-loving woman, I can't recommend it enough. This book goes beyond the basics and takes you on a deep exploration of the Tarot's power for holistic health and personal growth.

What sets this book apart is its thoughtful comparison of the traditional Rider-Waite deck to modern decks. It beautifully illustrates how the Tarot can be a versatile tool, using archetypes, symbols, and allegories to offer insights into various aspects of our lives.

As someone relatively new to Tarot, I appreciated the simplicity with which the author explains the system. It's not just about fortune-telling; it's about tapping into wisdom for healing on multiple levels - physical, emotional, energetic, intellectual, and spiritual.

The historical context and the insights into how to gain information from the cards make this book an excellent resource for both beginners and more experienced readers. The in-depth examination of the Major Arcana and Minor Arcana, considering elements, numerology, and their potential for holistic healing, was truly eye-opening.

If you're looking to embark on a meaningful journey of self-discovery and holistic healing through the Tarot, this book is a fantastic guide. It's well-written, insightful, and has become a valuable addition to my Tarot collection. Thank you, Kayla!

Loki

Coyote, Coyote, Coyote

we have a complex relationship. I have a coyote vertebrae I found out in the desert many years ago. Coyotes recently ate one of my cats, Mango. The trickster, jokester, slyster, heister.

It has taken me a long time to get this far in this painting, and I see more to do. Meanwhile, I make book covers and remake the pressed wildflowers from the Appalachian trail that my fairy stepson brought me, as well as creating a fra,e for my recently deceased sister-in-law, Carol. Since her death, both of her sons/my nephews have passed, as well as my across-the-street neighbor, Anita - we had been on the same street for thirty years.

Saturn Return in Pisces. Bless astrology for giving me some context, because certainly, I feel my faith has been being tested.

Seed Ritual

Seed Ritual

Find some seeds - pumpkin, sunflower, poppy, wildflowers

Whatever floats your fancy

Hold them in your palm and whisper your wishes

Imbue them with your hot breath

Walk around your house, church, or favorite field

Clockwise or counter, notice what feels right

At each of the four directions (and the cross directions)

Throw your seeds, scatter them

To the wind that they may find fertile ground

To the ants to feed the hive mind community

To the squirrels and chipmunks stuffing their cheeks with abundance

To the birds, who will fly into your dreams

Invite in the rain

Release any frustrations, cry

Welcome the sun f

Feel a sense of energy begin to build.

Trust that you'll be able to weed out

What is weak or ineffectual

Focus and simplify

Nourish your dreams

As they unfurl from a mere thought to full manifestation

Shelter your dreams - tell no one

Until you see sure signs of growth,

Ready for assistance

Immune to criticism

 Of the naysayers

Just like the rose is immune

With its thorns.

Seeds of hope

Seeds of change.

Seeds of peace

And seed money

Flourish into abundance

Benefiting all the creatures of the earth

This or something better now occurs

For the greatest good

So mote it be. Blessed be.

Paper Bark

Quivers

When I was in first grade, living in McLean, Virginia,  I had the biggest crush on Birch, who sat two desks away from mine in the second row. For some reason he wore little wrist sweatbands, maybe to emulate Bjorn Borg, the Swedish tennis champ of the time. We were partnered for the Horah dance at the holiday pagent, but he got sick and I had to dance with Ross instead.

Now when I look at the birch tree in my front yard, I'm aware of the rising sap, the way the Elm is stealing the sun away from it, and the spread of roots from the nearby bottlebrush. Yet it thrives, pushing out new leaves, allowing the bark to peel when need be.

"Once in a lifetime...

    Same as it ever was..."

                -Talking Heads

It's hard at the moment to not make a laundry list of the earth's woes. It's not so much a question of "what is happening"but "what am I doing about it?"

And that starts with loving yourself. Making peace with yourself. Change old patterns. Adopt a calm certainty. Notice all of the preparation it takes before emergence. Evolution - life is good, and it will get better. Allow yourself a sense of completion, and fulfillment, kisses on both cheeks, and job well done. A merging, a partnership, all that was unravelled will be knitted together again.
