Changing Habits

I'm always curious about how to continue good habits I've started and what other healthy habits I can create for myself in a joyful way, rather than as a chore or burden.

Interestingly, I moved my supplements from by the coffee machine to the bathroom as a direct influence from my sweetie. When I get up in the morning I'm used to hearing the hum of their toothbrush followed by the rattle of medications and I realized I'd probably be more consistent in taking my herbs and vitamins if I combined it with my daily cleaning routine, which has worked well over the last week.

Two habits I want to get into (or back into) are 1) doing daily stretches/yoga and 2) meditating. I printed out a copy of the sun salutation and have been doing this simple series for the past couple of days, either on the deck actually in the sun or in the bedroom, now that it feels like there is more space after switching furniture around. I can see getting a bigger, cushier rug up there for yoga during the rain season.

Also getting into the habit of stretching while watching TV with my daughter. It is so hard to be so passive, and though often I multi task on the computer. My back has certainly been talking to me for awhile about better posture and less sitting on my ass. I find myself stretching between clients, and even sometimes during sessions if they are lying down with their eyes shut, I can be gently moving my body in a kind of dance while leading the trance.

Part of this all came to me a few months ago when I first went to Wilder Ranch and I was reading a detox book talking about exercise and how simply action = life. I was singing my little warm up song in my head and flexing various muscles groups, and realized I could do this while driving. So for the last couple of months I sing my little song which driving, tensing and flexing muscles, thinking if it as "microsizing" ie micro exercising. Considering it's twenty minutes each way, I figure I'm getting forty minutes of exercise instead of passive driving. Sometimes I do it before going to bed or when I wake up in the middle of the night.  I feel good about being active daily by walking, hiking, yoga, mowing, sex, and now I want to balance it with passive exercise: stretching, Reiki, massage.

The other daily habit I want to cultivate is meditating. It used to be so routine and now it feels lacking in my discipline. That sounds too harsh. For me, meditating is a way to focus in, discover and express my essential being. It is a creative act and a recreative act, and has taken many forms throughout my lifetime, including yoga, coloring tarot cards, journaling, blogging, and yes, even farmville was a meditation in it's own right. Playing Suduko or doing a crossword puzzle has a similar effect on my mind - it is relaxing, and something has shifted from chaos to order.

So it's not like I don't have this habit, I just want it to shift form. Rather than sitting with my morning coffee and playing solitaire, I want to sit with my coffee and create tarot cards. I put the little table and chair in my altar area, along with colored pencils and my tarot binder, creating an inviting space for me to start my day. Doing the mandala art was inspiring and put me back in touch with the joy of making art. I'm sure you know what I mean, that zen zone when working on your photographs, different from tankville as a creative and productive act, hopefully relaxing for your engineer mind otherwise occupied with codes and bugs.

I like the habits my partner and I have created in our relationship. I like sharing our dreams in the morning, I like how we make coffee and make the bed, I love our habit of making out. Good and healthy, kissing is probably our best discipline. What good habits are you being mindful in creating now?

Vibrissae or The Crazy Cat Lady's Whisker Collection

Vibrissae: A Collection of Cats, Facts and Whiskers

Why do I collect whiskers? I don't really know.
It started on a whim, about 25 years ago.
Now I have almost two hundred, call me crazy,
From about a dozen different cats, and one dog named Maisy.

First whiskers from Zelda, then Sadie Baby,
By now I might be turning into that kind of cat lady.
They are my companions, familiars and kin,
In this way I honor their fuzzy contributions.

The first cat I remember, maybe I was two,
Was black and white Cori, with the sweetest mew.
Then a tabby named Fatty, who weighed 20 pounds,
A white persian Cotton, was the the next one around.

Later along came Alexander Boo Boo Kitty,
Sleek and grey. White Babylon was pretty,
Only on the earth for a year and a day,
She touched me most, more than words can say.

Whiskers are cool, here's some facts:
They are not just hair upon the cats.
Known as vibrissae, sensitive touch receptors,
They act like radar, little kitty interceptors.

Whiskers help cats to perceive, especially at night,
Fit in small places, figure out if they're tight.
Really, they act as the ultimate sensory gauge,
And just like us, whiskers change color with age.

In college I met Zelda, a cat from outer space,
Later in the stars, she took her rightful place.
Then at the flea market, we picked up Sadie Mae,
The Duchess of Nothing, the Queen of everyday.

As well as Rosie Posie, the Puddingest of Pops,
She kissed the girls and she never stopped.
For three long years, Ms. Calamity Jane,
Ruled our front stoop, then moved down the lane.

Did you know a group of cats is called a clowder?
And that here in Santa Cruz, we love our clam chowder?
A group of kittens is called a kindle - another fact,
There's always something new to know about cats.

For example, they appear in ancient inscriptions,
Yes indeedy, cats befriended the Egyptians.
Most cats have eighteen toes to hold all of those claws,
But polydactyl cats can have eight digits on any of their paws.

At the SPCA we met slinkster Sharkey Rue,
They said we'd rue the day - this was never true.
She'd slink around the house, slink through all the parts,
She was the slinksterest cat, slinking through our hearts .
(ref Fransceca Block)

At Herland we had a bookstore cat for a day or two -
But someone complained, sneezed, allergies, ah-chooo!
So at home did the Lilly Billy, little bit silly, come to stay,
What I loved about her most - she always had something to say.

Indeed, cats sleep about two thirds of the day,
This is to conserve energy - then pounce on their prey!
Felines have the most amazing retractable claws,
And about 30 sharp teeth in their maws.

Cats are persnickety - they don't like to get dirty.
They yowl when in heat - that's how they get flirty.
Actually, they can make over a hundred vocal sounds,
Expressing their needs, I mean, love with no bounds.

Next we were graced with the wonderous kittens,
Poppyseed Muffins and sweet Mango Mittens,
Then came our housemate's cats - Roxie and The Dude,
One was part Burmese, the other ragdoll with attitude.

Our next cat - a black, white orange combo,
Yes I am talking about June, the Calico.
She was alpha female, she showed no favors,
And so sweet Mango now lives with Jim, our neighbor.

Here is an interesting fact you might find strange,
Cats purr in the 20 to 140 Hertz range.
Helpful for illness, these purr-ticular vibrations,
Snuggling could be the best purr-scriptions!

Scientist took the time to carefully measure,
Just how a purr can lower blood pressure.
Lowering heart attacks, and reducing stress,
Healing bones, muscles and ligaments.

And then we had Maisy, who was very special,
Yes indeedy, she was trans-Pet-ual.
A cat trapped in a dog's body, she could even purr,
She had popcorn-y feet, and deep black fur.

As a perpetual cat-lover for all of my life,
Maisy taught me tolerance, acceptance of strife,
Just like their owner, trans, accepting and proud,
To be a part of a particularly colorful crowd.

Now Roxie! Now Rosie! Now Mango and Poppy!
On, CJ! On, Cotton! On, Alex and Sharkey
"To the top of porch! To the top of the wall!"
Each of these cats, I have loved them all.

For me it's whiskers, I'm curious what is your passion?
What do you pursue? What's your particular fashion?
Whatever you choose, whatever you select—
"Happy Collecting to all, and to all a good collect!"
(ref. Clement Clarke Moore)

You might not believes this, even think it's absurd,
But none of my pets' names are used for my passwords!
Simply talking about the weird thing I collect,
Helps me express my profound respect.

What will I do with these whiskers? Glad you asked,
I think I'll have them scattered, along with my ash.
I'm sure it's clear from what you read above,
What these whiskers really represent -  is unconditional love.

Keys to Success Ritual

Find two keys that have meaning to you. They might be your house keys, car keys, keys to your workplace, or a beautiful antique that you found at the flea market. Maybe it's an old key that you've been hanging onto for years, or has been lying around in the junk drawer, and maybe you don't even know what it goes to anymore, but just go ahead and bring these two keys together with this particular intention particular purpose (and yes, it's okay to make duplicates or use blank keys from the hardware store).

For the next two weeks (preferably New Moon to Full Moon) keep these two keys underneath your pillow. Every time you go to bed at night hold them in your hands, put them in your armpits, squeeze them between your legs -  anything to really Infuse these keys with your deepest desires, your most heartfelt intentions. Alternatively, wear the keys on a red ribbon around your neck, long enough so they touch your heart chakra. Make a list (in your journal, book of shadows, or a beautiful notecard or piece of stationery) of what is key in your life, i.e., what you truly value on a heartfelt level.

Notice that keys have the capacity to both lock and to unlock. Knowing you are holding the keys to success in your hands, make a list of what you are unlocking/welcoming in/opening up to, on all layers - physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Then make another list, of all the loose ends that need to be tied up, any old business/relationships, any closures. Keys can also represent safety, security, etc. What do keys mean to you? The key to success? The key to your heart? Play around in your journal and discover unlocking your own inner secrets.

After 2 weeks (preferably on the Full Moon) take one of the keys and bury it at a crossroads. This could be any intersection: two streets, two paths, a place in your garden, anywhere that you feel there is a sense of multiple opportunities, different steps that could be taken. Bury the key as deep as you want, whatever feels right, notice putting metal into the earth - an act of grounding, like a lightning rod attracting energy to that spot. Visualize of what you want to attract: clients, health, friends, success, love, support, empowerment, right livelihood? Grounding metal into the Earth is a way of establishing a solid feeling of channeling momentum into something that is constructive and productive, like putting in a tent stake and knowing you've taken the steps to protect yourself.

Then, in that particular location, simply notice all of the traffic - cars, pedestrians, or if it is buried out in nature could be ants, deer, the wind - whatever keeps crossing that particular path. Set the intention that any being or energy crossing over the key or near the key is both bringing you all of what you wrote down on your lists. Thus at the crossroads you're bringing in people/energy who will benefit from what you have to offer and you're also releasing those who have been deeply satisfied by your gifts and are happy with your work.

Every time you go by this particular place (which is why it's good to have it pretty close by to your current home or work space) you can keep affirming happy people seeking you out and happy people referring to you. Then on the New Moon or Full Moon you can also bless that place or wherever you have the second key.

What to do with the second key? Well, you can bury it in your own garden, put it in a medicine pouch, keep it on the ribbon around your neck , or keep it on your keychain - whatever is right for you. You are creating an energetic resonance between the crossroads and the key that you are holding onto in order to remind your Consciousness that you are in control, you have the key to success in your and you also recognize the key to success is interacting with other people/energy.

A few years ago, when I learned this ritual up in the mountains, I was blessed to have received two antique keys, one of which I buried at a main cross walk by a church knowing it was Holy Ground.  Every time I go by that place I visualize in my mind the same key which is now hanging in my front window, which in terms of feng shui translates to life path and career. I recognize I have been a helpful person (see helpful people boxes) and I'm inviting in more people who could benefit from what it is I have to offer. This is a win-win situation, which I consider key to personal success.

I hope this is fun, feel free to share your lists with me, and I'll infuse them with good energy. Blessings on this New Moon!

Warmly,
Kayla

Gratitude Board

Many folks are familiar with Vision Boards - creating a visual representation of goals, dreams, and desires - often through collage, and meditating upon it a daily or regular basis as a means of reflection, affirmation, and inspiration.

Also, most are familiar with the benefits of maintaining a gratitude journal - writing on a regular basis things that one is thankful for, appreciative of, or willing to celebrate, may it be as simple as celebrating the sunrise.

A Gratitude Board is a combination of what one is grateful for and tokens of gratitude from others in your life, may that be thank you cards, holiday cards, gift tags, awards, recommendations, reviews, testimonials, love notes, etc. When I see my gratitude board I am reminded of all the people that I have helped, and all the people who were helpful to me in the process. Have fun creating your own Gratitude Board, and feel in touch with the abundant blessings in your life.

Blessed Be.

Prayer on the Solar Eclipse

Divine Order,
Take charge of my life,
Today and every day.

All things work together
For good for me today.
This is a new and beautiful day,
There will never be another one like it.

I am Divinely Guided
 All day long
And whatever I do will prosper.

Divine Love,
Enfold me, surround me, enrapt me -
That I may go forth in peace.

I am going to be a marvelous success
In all of my undertakings.
And I will be happy
From now on.

Blessed be.

"Kayla has my deep gratitude for answering the call to do what she does. From my first session with her, I felt as though I was thrust back into the flow of the universe, after a difficult period of feeling afloat without direction. I think what I most appreciate and respect about her is that she is a teacher; from the start, it was clear to me that she wants to help me find and be in the solution. She is completely forthcoming with a remarkable array of useful information and resources. I don't know if anyone has ever helped me more, in such a short period of time." -Clarissa B., Santa Cruz

Upcoming Prosperity Workshop: Helpful People Boxes

Helpful People Boxes are a Feng Shui technique to attract power and wealth by blessing your resources for increasing income streams.

In the ancient art of Feng Shui, spaces (home, office, room, property) are divided up into nine sections, each with a specific “life value” or focus. For this workshop, we will focus on Wealth and Helpful Beings, two stations found opposite each other on the Bagua.

As opposites attract, and balance is often key to resolving any blocks in energy flow, we are often aware of how being in service has a correlation with our income and cash flow. One way to increase our positive cash flow energy is to focus on helpful beings, ie helpful people, friends, family, colleagues, team members, networks and community as well as spirit guides, angels, ancestors -“all visible and invisible beings”.

We will be making boxes using decoupage and sharing resources for mutual support. For more information, please check out this video:

Materials provided. Bring images/photos that you would like to include in your own helpful people box, as well as 10 business cards.
