Float

A client gifted me two 60-minute floats at a local spa that offers sensory deprivation tanks while being buoyant on Epsom salts in skin-temperature water in pods.

It was an interesting experience. I wish the staff had spent a little more time with us. Luckily I had read everything on the website. At first, it was cold getting into the Clamshell down after about 5 minutes. I was overheated and slightly panicked so I reopened the pod and used the supplied washcloth and spray bottle full of tap water to wash off my face. I had started out with a neck flotation device but I found it feeling restricted on my cartrid artery and I could feel my pulse pounding in my temples and my throat again. Again I had to sit up and wave to put on the lights. Cool my face off with the washcloth.

Next, I just floated. I wish I had put in the earplugs because now, eight days later I still have a crackling in my ear from water coming in. After about ten minutes, again I just felt complete discomfort, had to sit up and cleanse the salts from my face. I discovered the neck Halo which proved to be more comfortable for the rest of the session

I did various meditation techniques noticing that it was much more comfortable for me with my eyes shut. I only experience claustrophobia with my eyes open. I was aware of my partner's body floating next to mine. We held hands and our feet would occasionally touch toes. The music was a little bit too loud, but I didn't really want to mess with it and actually was soothed because one of the repeated loops was a piece of music that I happened to play in my own client sessions and it was an easy way to get into my particular hypnotic trance. When in that space I found myself more relaxed. Easier to let go. Feel that sense of timelessness rather than just thinking about what were we going to have for lunch next.

Suddenly there was a cold burst of water and I realized that the engines were on the signal for us to get out of the pod. I really wish they had more of a system like Well Within, where you just hear a gong going off. It felt disruptive. We each crammed into the tiny shower, but yum! Oh yum, the lovely products. Mostly I remember the cucumber-scented shampoo. Then we got dressed after putting our laundry in the bins and I was a little disappointed that we did not get any more love or special attention as we took our shoes off of the little rack where we had parked them earlier.

I do not fault the staff. They were definitely working hard to accommodate people who were arriving but it it felt a little impersonal. I'm not sure if I will go back. I'd rather float around and my own bathtub or float around in the pool to get that sense of release. Blessed be.

Vibrissae

Vibrissae
A Collection of Cats, Facts, and Whiskers

Inspired by the Santa Cruz Museum of Art And History's exhibit on local collectors, this book was a collaboration between a mother and daughter. Kayla Rose, a crazy cat lady at heart, has collected over a hundred cat whiskers that she found around the house over two decades from a medley of family pets. She wrote the poem to honor all the past, present, and future cats who bring joy into their lives.

Kayla and Amber Rose are wise in the ways of cats. No subtlety escapes their eyes. Full of humor and insight, this small book reveals much in its short pages. Well worth the time.

Holding On

Holding On

I would have held on to

That burnt-out light bulb

For twenty years or more

If you had asked

I did lose the Queen of Hearts

If we meet

I'll have to take off my clothes

I returned the tombstone

Anti-apartheid Bear with

The leather feet

All the past

Treasures

Journey Through the Tarot

Journey Through the Tarot
An Integrated System for Holistic Healing

A comparison of traditional Tarot cards to modern-day decks demonstrates how the Tarot is an integrated tool for holistic health that offers insights for personal growth and transformation through the use of symbols, archetypes, and allegories.

"This book is a true gem for both experienced tarot readers and beginners. Unlike a standard guide to tarot card meanings, this small and very readable volume adds a lot of context to tarot as a historical divination tool that adapts itself to modern-day readers. A delightful and informative book!" - Lana Tyehimba Touched by Tarot

Journey Through the Tarot is a gem for anyone looking to delve into the world of Tarot, and as a tarot-loving woman, I can't recommend it enough. This book goes beyond the basics and takes you on a deep exploration of the Tarot's power for holistic health and personal growth.

What sets this book apart is its thoughtful comparison of the traditional Rider-Waite deck to modern decks. It beautifully illustrates how the Tarot can be a versatile tool, using archetypes, symbols, and allegories to offer insights into various aspects of our lives.

As someone relatively new to Tarot, I appreciated the simplicity with which the author explains the system. It's not just about fortune-telling; it's about tapping into wisdom for healing on multiple levels - physical, emotional, energetic, intellectual, and spiritual.

The historical context and the insights into how to gain information from the cards make this book an excellent resource for both beginners and more experienced readers. The in-depth examination of the Major Arcana and Minor Arcana, considering elements, numerology, and their potential for holistic healing, was truly eye-opening.

If you're looking to embark on a meaningful journey of self-discovery and holistic healing through the Tarot, this book is a fantastic guide. It's well-written, insightful, and has become a valuable addition to my Tarot collection. Thank you, Kayla!
